I was working at a Starbucks in Chicago while this compilation was playing on the rotation. For the year I spent at that store this was by a wide margin the most popular mix among the staff. We kept the DVD it came on long after we were supposed to have retired it according to the corporate music schedule and would sometimes spend whole shifts just playing it on a loop. What’s more, the disc included another 20 or so tracks to supplement what was actually sold on the album, so double the fun. I was just out of college at the time and, even though I was very much aware that there was good popular music prior to Nirvana, I had summarily dismissed a lot of the product of the 80′s, probably something to do with bad associations with The Wedding Singer. (Sandler, you ruin everything) So this mix really was my first taste of Kate Bush, the Smiths and New Order, as well as Cocteau Twins (not on the official release, Heaven or Las Vegas was one of the extras). So I get it, it’s unnerving to hear your music co-opted by the Giant Green Mermaid, especially when it was part of what set you apart in your youth, but I hope you can be glad that at least one store full of kids, many of whom weren’t born when half of these tracks were released, got to hear and go crazy over all this great music. All thanks to Starbucks.
