No two are alike

Or perhaps the groundhog is to blame. But it was lots of fun to tromp around in the snow, hearing the crunching sound of our bootprints, and to feel the snowflakes on our tongues.
Some people have to drive an hour just to see some snow, so we considered ourselves lucky to have 6″ of powder just outside our door. After a snow day on Friday we went to Charlotte’s house Saturday and were excited to find that there was snow there, too! After some rain and a cold night, the snow packed up nicely into snowballs with satisfying heft, and a respectable snow person. Check out the First Snow 2008 album for all the evidence.

Before kids, I was a cynic, ironically detached from the sentimental pablum, the doilies and the glitter and especially the puns — We’re a great PEAR, Valentine! Yes, especially the puns.
But about a year ago I watched Leda decorate her Valentine butter cookies with a Romantic abandon — she has a Byronic way with colored sugars — and all that carefully accumulated cynicism started to melt away. This year I stayed up writing out Hello Kitty valentines and labels on pink, purple, and red Play-Dough. And I was among the other parents and grandparents who lined the preschool hallways, having somehow convinced ourselves that a Valentine’s Dance for three- and four-year-olds could be anything other than absolute, cupcake-fueled, screaming and twirling chaos. Like all the other idiots, I took pictures. See the February 2008 album for the evidence.
Happy February, everybody.
