Three cheers for Judah Maccabee

This is Leda’s third holiday season, but the first time she’s been aware of what’s going on. She has learned the basic concepts from her “My first Hanukkah” board book, and she always shouts Judah Maccabee’s name with glee when he fights back against King Antiochus. She sings the dreidel song enthusiastically, though she can’t quite get one to spin — we usually make with the gelt anyway.

Her gift on this first night of Hanukkah was her very own wooden holiday set — menorah, latkes & frying pan, etc. It held even more appeal than the prospect of lighting candles, which she was surprised to see outside the context of a birthday party. She is still asking about the Hanukkah cupcakes, as if maybe we forgot about them.

Then again there are mixed signals to contend with — who, for example, is this gentleman, whom she met just last week? Might *this* be the fabled Judah Maccabee?

Another important milestone: deftly using her own chopsticks. Leda still likes gyoza the best but now enjoys sweet potato rolls and the occasional nibble of hamachi nigiri. Pickled ginger = lead balloon, no matter how many times Dad tries.

What better lunchtime companion could a mom ask for? Confidential to Red Sox scouts: yes, she’s a southpaw, and she’s got a wicked curveball, and we will entertain offers of $51M to discuss the possibilities.
