Hallmark 2, Mom 0

Then again how could I resist, with Valentines like these? Before kids, I was a cynic, ironically detached from the sentimental pablum, the doilies and the glitter and especially the puns — We’re a great PEAR, Valentine! Yes, especially the puns.

But about a year ago I watched Leda decorate her Valentine butter cookies with a Romantic abandon — she has a Byronic way with colored sugars — and all that carefully accumulated cynicism started to melt away. This year I stayed up writing out Hello Kitty valentines and labels on pink, purple, and red Play-Dough. And I was among the other parents and grandparents who lined the preschool hallways, having somehow convinced ourselves that a Valentine’s Dance for three- and four-year-olds could be anything other than absolute, cupcake-fueled, screaming and twirling chaos. Like all the other idiots, I took pictures. See the February 2008 album for the evidence.

Happy February, everybody.
