Garden State

Oh, you’re so lucky, people kept saying about my April due date: this time you’ll be able to go outside with the baby right away. When Leda was born in October, it was too cold and damp to walk much anywhere except the mall. (However, after reading that sunshine was the best prescription for her jaundice, my mom and I took her on walks up and down the street, with warm blankets covering everything but her face. So those few inches got a few moments of UV radiation each day. Take THAT, dangerously high level of bilirubin!)

Anyway, I guess it was ironic in the Morrisette sense that the first few weeks of April were in fact pretty dreadful, weather-wise, as this year’s “April showers” caused major flooding in nearby communities, and the temperature hovered in the forties for most of Cleo’s first two weeks.

However. Spring has now announced its presence with authority, and we’ve been thrilled by recent trips to Branch Brook Park — see photo album — and the local arboretum, and the beach. We pick a different playground for each day of the week. And, all you Californians who were on the beach in January, you can just keep that to yourself for the time being. Because winter has made us appreciate the heck out of springtime, here in the garden state.
